Intro to Gardening Level 1
"The intent of this course is designed specifically for learners who have little experience with gardening to develop knowledge, investigate creativity and enhance social and employability skills. An Introduction to getting out into the garden and work as part of a team. Explore your creativity, what you need to do to care for plants and flowers, sow seeds, prepare soil for planting and develop skills in how to correctly dispose of garden waste. Health and safety, English, maths and digital skills will be embedded in the course.You are expected to be punctual and attend 100% of this course, if you do not attend for 3 consecutive weeks, you may be withdrawn. This will also reduce your chances of joining another course in the future.

• Record basic Latin names and technical horticultural language
• Demonstrate the need for different growing media
• Demonstrate propagation techniques (seed sowing and cloning) and use care techniques
• Practice different methods of pest and weed control."

No formal qualifications are necessary, just a keen interest in gardening. Assessment for applicants is based on an interview exploring prior experience, interest and ambition. Literacy and numeracy is also considered with the completion of an online skills assessment. Please allow up to 2 hours for this to take place.

Please note – the course will only go ahead subject to sufficient enrolments. You will be expected to attend every session, please let us know of any planned absences before you start the course.

Please bring along a pen and paper for note taking, a pair of secateurs and gardening gloves if you have them. You will also need to bring your own refreshments. You are advised not to purchase any materials or books until after the first session, as in the event of the class not running, no compensation can be given for expenditure incurred.

You may also choose to become a course representative for your class, which your tutor will discuss with the class at the start of your course.
