British Sign Language Conversation - level 1 Award
This course builds on your basic knowledge of British Sign Language (BSL) to further develop your knowledge, confidence and conversational skills.

You will study more complex sentence structures and additional vocabulary as well as improving your productive and receptive BSL skills, allowing you to better communicate with people who are Deaf or have a hearing impairment.

Following on from the 'Get Started with British Sign Language: Unit 101' course, this course will cover the remaining units of the Level 1 Award in British Sign Language.

By the end of the course you should be able to:
• Communicate and demonstrate an understanding in a given range of topics
• Maintain a basic social conversation in BSL
• Communicate about everyday life in BSL using a simple range of vocabulary and signing structures

This is a qualification course, which is assessed through two short mandatory exams, carried out by your course tutor. Having already successfully achieved the first unit of the Level 1 Award in British Sign Language, once you have passed all three of these exams these you will have achieved the Level 1 Award in British Sign Language qualification.

Throughout the course, your tutor will assess your progress through verbal/sign assessments, group discussions and evaluations. Your will record your progress on your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and your tutor will provide you with ongoing feedback to support you.

We strongly encourage you to practice your BSL skills outside the classroom with friends, relatives and/or other fellow learners.

Before enrolling you on this course, you will need to complete a skills assessment to ensure that this is the correct level for you.
You will need:
• to have already passed the first unit (unit 101) of the Level 1 Award in British Sign Language (either with us or elsewhere)
• sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL.

If you don’t yet meet the pre-course requirements, we may recommend other courses which will support you to progress and achieve your goal.

• You will be expected to be punctual and attend 100% of this course. Please do not book holidays in term time and let us know of any planned absences before you start the course. If you do not attend for 2 consecutive sessions, without prior notice you may be withdrawn, and this will reduce your chances of joining another course in the future.

• Learners may complete an Emotional Health and Wellbeing survey to help us identify and support these needs appropriately.

• We use a mixture of classroom based and online learning for classwork and homework.

Please bring pen, paper and an A4 ring binder. Cost Involved: £20-£30 for a course book/CD which you will be advised of at the first session. Please do not purchase any items before the first session.

• Additional support within the classroom

You can progress to:
• a Level 2 Certificate in British Sign Language course with another provider

A level 1 qualification may help your CV stand out in some particular sectors of work, such as schools or front line work in the community. You may need further qualifications and/or relevant work experience to progress into employment.

This the course will support you to develop transferrable employability skills including communication, team-working and time-management skills as well as increasing your awareness of the barriers faced by people who are Deaf or have a hearing impairment.

• You can give your views through your ILP, course evaluation forms, surveys and our Compliments, Comments and Complaints forms which can be found in Centre offices.
• You may also choose to become a course representative for your class. Course Representatives can then stand for election onto our Learner Council

• We want you to enjoy your learning experience and feel safe, equal and respected while you are here with us. If you have any concerns, please report it to a member of staff or directly to a Designated Safeguarding Officer as soon as possible.

• To ensure that our learners can communicate with each other safely we offer a variety of functions in Google suite. We strongly discourage the use of other social media groups such as Whatsapp, which rely on personal data being shared.
