Deaf Awareness and Communication - Level 1 Award
The intent of this qualification course is to provide introductory knowledge and skill for enhancing communication with deaf people, and is suitable for those who wish to acquire basic knowledge of how deafness and deafblindness affects communication and want to acquire skills to facilitate basic communication with deaf people.

At the end of the course you should be able to:
- Understand factors that affect successful communication with deaf and deafblind people
- Identify barriers to communication in society for deaf and deafblind people, and how these barriers can be overcome
- Understand the work of communication professionals, communication support roles and organisations that work with deaf and deafblind people
- Select appropriate communication tactics for use with a deaf or deafblind person
- Identify the best conditions for deaf and deafblind people in relation to the environment
- Know a range of tactics for communicating with deaf and deafblind people
- Repair a breakdown in communication with a deaf or deafblind person

Your tutor will assess your learning and progress throughout the course through ongoing observation, question and answer, tasks and exercises.
You will record your progress through your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and your tutor will provide you with ongoing feedback to support you.
You will complete two mandatory assessments for this qualification, one multiple choice written assessment and one practical assessment.

Before enrolling you on this course, you will need to complete an initial assessment to ensure that this is the correct level for you.
You will need:
- Entry level 3 English skills
- No previous BSL knowledge is required.

If you don’t yet meet the pre-course requirements, we may recommend other courses which will support you to progress and achieve your goal.

Attendance and punctuality are vital to your progress and success in your learning. Therefore, you are expected to be punctual and attend 100% of this course. You will also need to be able to submit assignments by the deadlines set by your tutor, which you will complete outside of the weekly class time. All classes are asked to complete the Emotional Health and Wellbeing survey at the beginning and end of their course. This enables us to see whether learning has a positive impact on wellbeing and it also enables us to identify and help people who need support.

You will develop some employability skills such as communication, team work and meeting deadlines.

You may need further qualifications at other institutions and/or relevant work experience to progress into employment. However, a basic level 1 qualification may help your CV stand out in some particular sectors of work such as schools or front line work in the community.
