Get Started with Millinery: create your own fascinator or headpiece
The intent of this course is to introduce the learner to basic millinery techniques using sinamay – one of the most popular materials used in millinery to create a fascinator/head piece suitable for a wedding or Ascot!

At the end of the course you should be able to:
· Complete a selection of millinery stitches/techniques
· Use sinamay to create a base
· Attach trimmings
· Select a suitable method to secure fascinator/headpiece (comb, elastic or headband)
· Create a fascinator/headpiece
· Work safely and effectively when using tools, equipment and materials.

Your tutor will assess your learning and progress throughout the course through ongoing observation, question and answer, tasks and exercises. Your progress will be recorded on your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and your tutor will provide you with ongoing feedback to support you.

Beginners welcome, no experience is required.

This course may include some elements of blended learning, you will be given further details during your first session. You will receive an induction to online learning at the beginning of your course and your tutor will work with you to develop the skills you need to successfully learn online. Additional support will also be available to you, if required. In order to take part you will need to have access to the internet and a laptop or personal computer. You will be able to book computer access in centres if you don’t have a computer and/or internet access at home or may be able to borrow a device through our Loan and Learn Scheme (subject to availability).

You will need a pen, paper, and be required to purchase sinamay and basic sewing equipment with costs to be approximately £20 (depending upon chosen materials). Advice and guidance will be givenat the first session. You are welcome to bring trimmings and sewing materials you may already have to the class. Materials will be supplied for the first session but learners must purchase their own for the second session. A list of suppliers will be given at the first class.

This course is designed to develop your sewing skills and does not lead directly to employment. If you are gaining employment in this area you may be interested in our qualification sewing courses.

You may also choose to become a course representative for your class, which your tutor will discuss with the class at the start of your course.
