Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping
The intent of this qualification course is to develop your understanding of bookkeeping principles to advance your career in bookkeeping and accounting. It leads to a qualification called ‘Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Bookkeeping’, accredited by the Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT). This course is designed for people with prior accounting knowledge.
You will build upon your existing knowledge and skills and cover topics including manual double entry bookkeeping and associated documents and processes, up to Trial Balance standard.

At the end of this course you should be able to:
● Understand double-entry bookkeeping, integrate books of prime entry and describe coding system functions
● Understand discounts and settlement, trade and bulk discount differences
● Prepare and process customer and supplier invoices and credit notes
● Total and balance a 3-column analysed cash book
● Total, balance and reconcile petty cash records within an analysed petty cash book
● Process ledger transactions and extract a trial balance
● Control accounts, journals and the banking system
● Understand the purpose and use of control accounts and journals
● Maintain and use control accounts and journals
● Reconcile bank statements with cash books
● Understand the banking process and main services of banks and building societies
● Understand requirements of retention and storage relating to banking documents.

Your tutor will assess your learning throughout the course through observations, question and answer, tasks and exercises and assignments. Your progress will be recorded on your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and your tutor will provide you with ongoing feedback to support you.
The qualification is awarded upon successful completion of an online exam.

Before enrolling on this course, you will need to complete an initial assessment to ensure that this is the correct level for you.
You will need:
• Level 1 maths skills
• Level 1 computer skills
• Level 1 English skills
• Prior achievement of a level 1 bookkeeping course
• Prior experience of working in finance and the desire to gain an industry-recognised qualification.
If you don’t yet meet the pre-course requirements, we may recommend other courses which will support you to progress and achieve your goal.

This course will include blended learning, so you should expect to attend some sessions online and some in a centre, you will be given further details during your first session. You will receive an induction to online learning at the beginning of your course and your tutor will work with you to develop the skills you need to successfully learn online. Additional support will also be available to you, if required. In order to take part you will need to have access to the internet and a laptop or personal computer. You will be able to book computer access in centres if you don’t have a computer and/or internet access at home or may be able to borrow a device through our Loan and Learn Scheme (subject to availability).

You could progress to the AAT Level 2 Foundation Certificate in Accounting.

You could work within a large finance department or as an independent professional. It could also improve the skills you need to manage your own accounts if you are self-employed.
