British Sign Language Conversation - level 1 Award
The intent of this course is further develop British Sign Language (BSL) skills acquired on the Getting Started with British Sign Language: Unit 101 course. You will study more complex sentence structures and additional vocabulary in BSL to better communicate with hearing impaired or Deaf people, and improve both your production and reception of BSL.
This course will cover Units 102 and 103 of the Level 1 Award and is designed to build on the knowledge acquired on the previous Getting Started with British Sign Language: Unit 101 course. You must have passed unit 101 BSL to be able to enrol on this course. On completion and achievement of this course, you will gain both unit 102 + 103 and achieve the full level 1 award BSL qualification.

At the end of the course you should be able to:
· Understand signed communication in a given range of topic
· Understand signed communication and answer simple questions about everyday situations
· Communicate in BSL using a simple range of vocabulary, a given range of topics and signing structures
· Take part in and maintain a basic conversation in BSL

Your tutor will assess your learning throughout the course through verbal/sign assessments, group discussions and evaluations.
Your progress will be recorded on your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and your tutor will provide you with ongoing feedback to support you.
You will complete an exam which will confirm your achievement of the qualification

You must have already passed Unit 101 BSL to enrol on this course.
You must have sufficient sight, manual dexterity, facial and body movement to produce and receive BSL.
If you don’t yet meet the pre-course requirements, we may recommend other courses which will support you to progress and achieve your goal.

This course may include some elements of blended learning, you will be given further details during your first session. You will receive an induction to online learning at the beginning of your course and your tutor will work with you to develop the skills you need to successfully learn online. Additional support will also be available to you, if required. In order to take part you will need to have access to the internet and a laptop or personal computer. You will be able to book computer access in centres if you don’t have a computer and/or internet access at home or may be able to borrow a device through our Loan and Learn Scheme (subject to availability).

Upon successful completion of this course you can enrol on the British Sign Language -Level 2 certificate.

You will develop some employability skills such as communication, team work and meeting deadlines.

You may need further qualifications at other institutions and/or relevant work experience to progress into employment. However, a basic level 1 qualification may help your CV stand out in some particular sectors of work such as schools or front line work in the community.
