Digital Photography intermediate
The intent of this course is to explore techniques for creating better photographs and approach a range of different subject more creatively. This course is for learners who have already completed a beginners’ course in Digital Photography, and want a hands-on opportunity to improve their picture taking skills using a Digital SLR or compact camera. Topics covered will include composition, metering, exposure, use of flash, use of lenses, bracketing, start using manual controls and some Photoshop techniques. Learners will be encouraged to critically analyse their photographs and practice outside classroom time.

At the end of the course you should be able to -
• Correctly use a digital SLR or compact camera more creatively with some manual advanced
camera controls.
• Identify and apply creative composition techniques.
• Apply digital editing techniques using Photoshop CS5.
• Produce a small portfolio of 6 to 10 photographs.
• Safely operate Photography equipment.

Your tutor will assess your learning and progress throughout the course through ongoing observation, question and answer, tasks and exercises. Your progress will be recorded on your Individual Learning Plan (ILP) and your tutor will provide you with ongoing feedback to support you.

This course is not suitable for complete beginners; you will have ideally completed the Beginners Digital Photography course and/or have some knowledge of Aperture and Shutter Speed controls. Good knowledge of opening and saving files on the computer and familiarity with the mouse and keyboard is essential. This course is suitable for DSLR users. Learners who have compact cameras are welcomed to the course, but be aware that a compact digital camera may have limited functions.

This course may include some elements of blended learning, you will be given further details during your first session. You will receive an induction to online learning at the beginning of your course and your tutor will work with you to develop the skills you need to successfully learn online. Additional support will also be available to you, if required. In order to take part you will need to have access to the internet and a laptop or personal computer. You will be able to book computer access in centres if you don’t have a computer and/or internet access at home or may be able to borrow a device through our Loan and Learn Scheme (subject to availability).

You will develop some employability skills such as applying numbers and measurements, communication, planning and meeting deadlines. This course does not lead directly into employment; you may need further qualifications at other institutions to progress into employment.
